“If you go to Milan [ Design week ] you see what will be in stores tomorrow; if you go to Dutch Design week in Eindhoven you will see what will be in stores in 5 years.”
– Tim Vermeulen, Program Director of the Dutch Design Foundation
Dutch Design Week (DDW) is the second largest design-week event in Europe, centered in the city of Eindhoven, which is about 125km south of Amsterdam near the Dutch border with Belgium. Organized by the Dutch Design Foundation, it focuses is on designs of the future, showcasing amazing works of hundreds of designers in pavilions across the city.
The event was started in 1998 with the purpose of bringing together entrepreneurs and designers and has grown every year since then with the support of the City of Eindhoven, the Dutch Design Counsel and of course many partners and creatives.
2017’s theme was “Stretch”, applied by exhibitors in a variety of ways – from the literal stretching of component materials to doing more with less via eco-friendly initiatives. One of the largest exhibits in 2017 was an entire building of “borrowed” materials, constructed for the event in under two weeks. The façade of the structure was comprised of 9500 colourful recycled-plastic tiles, the raw materials for which were donated over time by the citizens of Eindhoven and surrounding towns. Other parts of the structure were standard building materials that were “on loan” from their owners – with the interesting twist that when something is loaned to you, you cannot damage it – so no sawing, drilling, gluing or similar that you’d normally do when building a structure.
Of course, with an event this successful you need to plan your visit in advance – the event regularly attracts over 300,00 visitors from around the world to a city whose population only numbers 225,000 so flights and hotels book up quickly! The 2018 dates for this year’s event are October 20th – 28th.
