As of August 16th, 2018, York University replaced the logo for the York Lions with their new design created by Doug and Partners, as a part of the York Lions re-branding process. Since then, their new logo has begun to appear on all York Lion materials the university has released.
While the university acknowledges it will take some time before everything with the old York Lions logo is replaced with the new one, all of their digital media contains the new branding, and the new logo is being printed on all new products as they are made.
The executive director of Athletics and Recreation at York says “This is an exciting time to be a part of the Lion Pride! We have introduced a powerful new look that we think will resonate with our students and the York community as a whole.”
Until 2003 the sports teams for York University were called the York Yeomen and the York Yeowomen. Then, for the next fifteen years, the teams would be known as The York Lions and given a gender-neutral logo depicting a partly male and party female lion. However, the university has recently decided that this logo was inadequate, calling it “outdated, antiquated, and extremely expensive to reproduce.”
The new logo features a side view of a fierce and powerful lion in motion bearing a full mane. Instead of the over complicated previous design, this new design applies principles of suggestion and contour, creating a much more mature appearance. The lion is red while written in black underneath the lion’s chin are the letters “YU” for York University.
Doug and Partners designed York University’s new logo, a company specializing in advertising, strategic planning, account management and digital services. They have worked with many well known businesses both in Canada and internationally, including Canada Goose, La Prep and Miele, offering innovative branding material and outstanding new designs. For this project Doug and Partners completed a full re-branding for the York Lions including primary and secondary marks, graphic design standards, initial launch campaign concept and creative development, departmental identification package and integration with York University’s Central Marketing.
Staff and students agree that the university’s new logo is more straightforward, sleeker and bolder. The university hopes that the new design will be a source of pride for the York Lions and will give the school a boost of dignity and character.
